The following article appeared in TheStar newspaper on 4 July 2012.

Twenty-five-year-old Christina Ng was working for pharmaceutical company in Petaling Jaya after graduating with a bachelor’s degree in biotechnology, but she was not happy with her income.

“I was barely making ends meet, and I decided to sell shoes online for additional income. I have always loved shoes and I knew what was lacking in the Malaysian market. There were very few outlets selling sky-high heels (five inches or more) and there were hardly any stores online,” said Ng. Ng started her blog shop selling heels because she knew there was a demand for it.

With start-up capital of RM10,000 from her savings, Ng started a blog shop that sold shoes from China in July 2010.

“We wanted something different and fresh. We knew there was a market for these heels in Malaysia and there is a strong demand for them.

“My mom was helping me out and we were operating www.christyng.com from our living room in Bukit Gasing,” she added.

By the end of the first month, the response was beyond Ng’s expectations. The company’s Facebook page had 5,000 “likes” and the blog had received 2,000 hits. As the business grew, Ng decided to quit her day job and fully concentrate on managing business operations.

The company also began to diversify into bridal shoes, flats, sandals, wedges, accessories, jewellery and clutches.

“Bridal shoes are a big hit. It contributes to 35% of total our sales despite only being launched in November last year,” Ng explained.

Besides this, christyng.com also provides custom-made heels.

Today, the website receives on average 20,000 unique visitors monthly and their Facebook page has over 100,000 likes, and was recently awarded Webpreneur of the Year at the DiGi WWWOW Awards.

With the company’s monthly overheads averaging at RM7,000, Ng said business is still growing at a steady pace.

Christyng.com records an average monthly turnover of RM60,000. Ng said she has loyal customers from Australia, Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines.

Moving forward, the brand plans to introduce a series of headbands and venture into the high-fashion segment.
